A young couple, we’ll call them Joe and Mary, decide to take one last vacation as a married couple before their first child, who is due on St Valentine’s Day, makes his arrival. Christmas is chaotic in both their families, so they choose the holidays to get away to Puerto Vallarta. When Mary goes into labor on Christmas Eve, it’s realized she must have miscalculated, when she gives birth to a healthy baby boy just after midnight. No, this isn’t a modern day Christmas story.
The fact of the matter is little Joey is Mexican. What makes him so is that he was born in Mexico, in spite of his parentage. Upon presentation of the birth certificate and proof of at least one parent holding citizenship in the USA, Baby Joey will be issued a CRBA (Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America). It’s not horribly complex but it is important for Joey’s future since he is not a natural born citizen of the United States and his life could get complicated years down the road, when applying for a passport, university, bank loans, Social Security and other privileges. Joey will not be able to
